The foundations for the journal were established following the foundation of the Faculty of Defectology at the University of Tuzla in 1993. Recognizing the need for a scientific publication that would support the development and dissemination of research in special education, rehabilitation, and related disciplines, the Faculty initiated the publication of the journal Defectology.

The first issue of Defectology was published in 1995, with an initial print run of 300 copies. From its beginnings, the journal provided a platform for the publication and exchange of scientific and professional knowledge and was open to contributions from both domestic and international authors.

Over the following years, the journal developed alongside the Faculty and reflected the scientific, professional, and terminological changes taking place in the fields of education, special education, and rehabilitation. The development of these disciplines, together with the increasing multidisciplinary and international orientation of the journal, created the need for a title and editorial concept that would more accurately reflect its contemporary scientific scope.

In 2018, the journal entered a new stage of its development under the title Research in Education and Rehabilitation (RER). The new title reflected contemporary terminology in educational and rehabilitation sciences, the journal’s broader multidisciplinary scope, and its increasing orientation toward the international academic community.

Since 2018, Research in Education and Rehabilitation has been published regularly by the Faculty of Education and Rehabilitation, University of Tuzla, with two issues per year. The journal has maintained a continuous publication schedule while progressively developing its editorial procedures, international cooperation, digital publishing infrastructure, and standards of research integrity.

Today, Research in Education and Rehabilitation is an international, peer-reviewed, open-access scientific journal dedicated to publishing original research, reviews, and other scholarly contributions in education, rehabilitation, special education, health sciences, psychology, and related interdisciplinary fields. The journal brings together authors, reviewers, and Editorial Board members from Bosnia and Herzegovina and the wider international academic community.

Building upon a scientific publishing tradition that began in 1995, Research in Education and Rehabilitation continues to strengthen its international visibility, editorial quality, accessibility, and commitment to recognized standards of scholarly publishing.
